    Currently, the turbo for cars has become a very common element, and in some ways, almost indispensable in today’s engines.     How the turbo works for cars

    Let’s take as an example a four-stroke engine, the air coming from the outside will arrive naturally to the cylinders and at the same pressure, it contains in the atmosphere. It is because of this process that the engines that do not have pipes are called atmospheric or naturally aspirated. On many occasions the volume of the air could be insufficient, this means that it is necessary to resort to an increase of cylinder capacity, which consists of changing the sizes of the cylinders. Another better option is to resort to a turbocharger in order to increase the thrust artificially. It must be taken into account that this important and popular mechanical element is in charge of receiving all the exhaust gases that have already been expelled from the cylinder by the exhaust valve.


    How many types of car turbochargers are there?

    Currently, we will find many different forms of supercharging for internal combustion engines, among the most prominent, we can find four types of turbochargers:

    Fixed Geometry:

    It is the most economical and efficient in the automotive market, but it offers the worst response time due to the lack of moving parts. 

    Variable Geometry:

    This type of turbine for cars consists of moving parts, this allows the turbo to effectively harness the gases to increase its performance and all this at low revolutions. We can find this same type of turbine in diesel engines. 

    Twin Scroll:

    This will allow a better channeling of air to the cylinders. All this thanks to independent ducts, which at the same time will provide a much more optimal performance throughout the rev range. 


    This type of turbo for cars does not use exhaust gases but is fed by the engine itself, a very positive factor because it causes a quick response throughout the engine speed. 

    It should be noted that it has an increase in consumption as a negative point, it is simple mechanically, but very heavy at the time of installation.

    The turbocharger in gasoline and diesel cars

    Generally speaking, a turbocharged gasoline engine will give you a better response when it comes to medium revolutions, while the naturally aspirated one gives much better performance. And although it offers a much lower consumption, as well as emissions that are pollutants of nitrogen oxides (NOx), it is also good to keep in mind that it is more reliable and more expensive to maintain. Finally, a naturally aspirated gasoline engine will allow a much more direct and progressive power delivery, this happens because it lacks a delay in the response of the shift, which is very characteristic of this system.

    How to keep the turbo of our car in good condition? 

    In order for you to understand the importance of a good maintenance of the turbo for cars, it is enough to tell you that the turbines of the turbo can exceed 200,000 revolutions per minute. This will cause temperatures of around 1000°C, which is why it is necessary to minimize their effort and extend their useful life as much as possible. 

    In addition, an automotive turbo failure can be very costly. 

    In order to extend the life time of the turbo for cars it is good to carry out healthy habits for the use of the turbo.

    • Avoid cold accelerations, this is because like the rest of the engine of our car, the turbo is greased in the initial phase of its use.
    • We must not accelerate sharply at a standstill, this is done in order to avoid a bad rotation of the turbines. 
    • Use a quality oil and check its level and condition on a regular basis. 
    • Replace the air and oil filters within the recommended period.
