Being a driving instructor in Chile is a highly demanded profession, as every day that passes the Traffic Law and its requirements increase in order to obtain a licence. 

In Chile you will be able to find a large number of driving schools, it works for those who are just starting out in driving as well as for those who are looking to obtain their professional driving license. 

However, very few are aware that these institutions have to comply with certain types of requirements. 

Being a driving instructor in Chile is a job for which a series of requirements are necessary. 

In this way you will be able to obtain all the necessary permits to be able to work as an instructor in the schools that are authorised throughout the national territory.

How to become a driving instructor in Chile?

In order to become a driving instructor in Chile, the first thing you need to know is that you have to meet certain requirements.

The same should also be taken into account if you want to teach theoretical classes or if you will be teaching different practical skills. 

These same accreditations will be given by the SEMEP which is the (Section of Psychometric Measurements of Carabineros de Chile).


Non-professional licences

If you wish to obtain the SEMEP certification to become a practical and basic mechanics instructor in class B courses, as a future applicant you must have at least the following documents:

  • The applicant must hold a class B licence, which must be at least seven years old. 
  • Must have at least a high school level education, complete secondary education or its equivalent. 
  • You must have a valid identity card, a photocopy of which you must bring with you when you apply. 
  • The applicant must demonstrate that he/she has passed a training course related to basic mechanics and traffic. 
  • The applicant must also be morally fit, which will be determined by analysing his or her background certificate and the driver’s curriculum vitae. 

Once all these requirements have been met, the applicant must take the following exams:

  • Theoretical and practical examinations. 
  • Examination of basic mechanics. 
  • Sensometric and psycho-technical examinations. 
  • In addition to carrying out a medical examination. 

These same exams will be repeated every 2 to 4 years, thus maintaining the accreditation that will allow them to perform as a practical driving instructor.

The requirements to become a theoretical driving instructor for class B licences are the same, but the difference is the seniority of the class B licence. 

The examinations to be taken will be theoretical only.

Professional licences

In the case of professional licences, the instructor applicant must meet very different requirements from those for non-professional licences, such as:

  • You must hold a licence equivalent to the class of driving licence, for which they wish to be instructors at a rank over 7 years.
  • The applicant must prove that he/she has completed secondary education or equivalent.
  • To have a valid identity card and a photocopy of it. 
  • Show moral suitability, this will be done by showing the applicant’s background certificate and the applicant’s life daughter.
  • The applicant must take and pass a driving, theory and mechanics course, which is intended for those who wish to become instructors for professional driving schools.

If the applicant meets all of the above requirements, applicants for SEMEP accreditation to become a driving instructor must take the following exams in order to become a professional driving instructor in Chile:

  1. Pass a theory test. 
  2. Practical examination. 
  3. Pass a mechanical skills test. 
  4. Psychometric and sociometric tests. 
  5. Pass a medical examination. 

How much does a driving instructor earn in Chile?

The salary of a driving instructor in Chile will depend on the number of lessons he/she gives, the duration of the lessons, the amount of travel and the commune where he/she is going to work.

Thus, if you are planning to become a driving instructor, you should be aware that the salary will range from 600,000 to 900,000 pesos.

SEMEP Accreditation

SEMEP accreditation will be a prerequisite for you to become a driving instructor in Chile. 

It is delivered by carabineros in Chile in a section that is located in Av. Pedro de Valdivia 4601, Ñuñoa Santiago, inside what would be the National Stadium.

The cost of this same procedure is not indicated in the institution, but you can obtain it by calling SEMEP itself.
